My cousin, bless his ass, actually owned that KISS Ace Frehley 1951-2025 shirt. It was the kind with the big, almost too bright, image plastered across the front. He wore it everywhere back in the day – to the skating rink, to the arcade, even to church, sometimes, much to my grandma’s dismay. I remember thinking Ace Frehley looked unbelievably cool, all decked out in that makeup and the way he held his guitar. I was probably ten, maybe eleven, and utterly convinced I’d become a rockstar someday, probably in a band just as awesome as KISS. Of course, that dream mostly involved me singing into a hairbrush in my bedroom, but still.

That shirt, though… it was a conversation starter. People always had something to say, good or bad. I recall a few folks giving him side-eyes at school, whispering behind their hands. Some of the girls thought he was hot, or at least the band was, and I was secretly jealous of the attention he got. Then there were the other rock kids, the ones who actually knew how to play instruments. They’d nod in appreciation, like it was a secret handshake. It was a tangible piece of that era, that specific slice of time when glam rock reigned supreme, and everyone wanted a piece of the action.

The design itself was pretty iconic; I believe it had Ace’s image, the spiky hair, the star on his forehead, and the signature guitar. Years later, when I started collecting vintage band shirts, I searched for that very design. No luck, sadly. I knew, even then, that was a special, nostalgic article of clothing. He always told me it was like a talisman; he thought it channeled Ace’s energy. It probably had a few holes in it, worn from the multiple washes and trips through the dryer.

It’s strange to think about it now, with Ace gone. I saw somewhere that the shirt design evolved, too. I think I liked the earlier ones best. I often wonder what happened to that specific t-shirt. I’m betting it’s tucked away somewhere in a box, a silent memorial to a time when life felt simpler, when a rock anthem and a bold graphic could encapsulate the world. My cousin eventually traded it for a motorcycle jacket, a regrettable decision he still regrets.

I was more of a Paul Stanley fan, actually. My favorite KISS memory wasn’t a concert or an album, but actually meeting my cousin’s band, who was playing a pretty sad cover of ‘Rock and Roll All Nite.’ I don’t know why, but I always preferred the voice of Paul Stanley. However, when I look back at my own history, Ace Frehley’s impact was evident in a wide number of things; from the way I styled my hair to my interest in guitar playing.
