Christmas I like to slide inside on top shirt
The attic air always smelled of dust and forgotten things, especially around December. This year, though, the familiar scent was overlaid with something sweeter, a hint of pine that whispered of the Christmas season. I remember the yearly ritual of dragging down the cardboard boxes, their sides softened with age, filled with ornaments. Each one a tiny echo of Christmases past, held within its delicate glass form or chipped paint. One particular ornament, a little felt snowman with a crooked grin and a missing button eye, always brought a chuckle. It was a casualty of a childhood mishap, but its imperfection made it perfect in its own way.

Putting up the tree wasn’t just about lights and tinsel. It was a sensory overload – the prickly needles, the scent of the artificial tree overpowering my senses, the sudden sparkle and shine from the ornaments. My younger sister, bless her ass, always wanted to put the star on top, even though she was barely tall enough to reach the bottom branches. It was a tradition. There was the constant, subtle hum of Christmas music in the background, a chaotic mix of Bing Crosby and Mariah Carey.

The anticipation of presents was a tangible thing, a knot of excitement in my stomach. The brightly wrapped gifts piled up beneath the tree, their shapes and sizes hinting at untold treasures within. I remember spending hours shaking them, trying to guess their contents, even though I knew it was futile. But I knew the actual joy was not just in the objects, but the shared experience of opening them together, a cacophony of ripped paper and joyous exclamations.

One year, I got the only thing I had asked for, a particular brand of a vintage skateboard and I felt like I was floating. I probably spent the entire Christmas Day gliding around the house on the new wheels, dodging furniture and shrieking with delight. Even my grumpy grandpa had a smile as he watched me. His own memories of Christmas were probably stirring up.

Beyond the shiny baubles and the gifts, Christmas was always about the food. My grandmother’s kitchen transformed into a fragrant wonderland, with the delicious smell of cookies baking, roasting turkey, and spices. It was a marathon of cooking and eating, full of family gathered around the table, the sound of laughter filling the air. There was a specific cake she used to bake. The recipe was kept strictly secret.

As I grew up, Christmas took on different shades. The magic remained, but it was tinged with a nostalgic understanding that time, like the melting snow outside the window, slipped away. The importance of the decorations, of the food, the gifts, was nothing compared to the warmth of companionship, the gathering together. Today, it still evokes a strange mix of joy and a gentle ache for the past. I think that’s how it should be.
