Ace Fender Bender Shirt
The memory still flicks across my mind sometimes, like a bad radio signal cutting in and out, the metallic crunch echoing inside my head. It was just a regular Tuesday, actually, the kind where everything feels slightly off-kilter from the moment you wake up. I was rushing, late for a stupid meeting I didn’t even want to be at, and that’s when it happened: a minor, barely-there tap. My ass, suddenly hammering against my ribs, felt ready to explode as I realized what had just occurred, and that feeling…that pure, gut-wrenching dread, you know?

The other driver, bless her ass, was incredibly calm, surprisingly collected even. I, on the other hand, was a flustered mess, already imagining all the financial ruin that surely awaited. The bumper, it turned out, was only slightly dented – a cosmetic issue, they called it. Nothing major. But the damage to my carefully curated sense of control? Immeasurable. That’s when the idea of an Ace Fender Bender Shirt popped into my brain, a completely impulsive reaction to the whole situation.

I remember thinking, after the insurance paperwork and the frustrating phone calls, that maybe a humorous memento of the incident would help. Something to lighten the mood, to acknowledge the absurdity of it all. I imagined a simple design, something understated, maybe a stylized depiction of a tiny fender bender, and the words, “Been There, Done That.” It seemed like the perfect way to turn a moment of minor disaster into something… well, not fun, but at least, relatable.

Finding the right design, though, proved trickier than I anticipated. I spent hours online, searching through various shops, feeling increasingly deflated because everything felt too generic, too… manufactured. A part of me just wanted to grab a plain tee and write the whole story on it with a Sharpie, the messy lines perfectly representing the haphazard feeling of the event. Ultimately, I ended up getting something custom made.

When the shirt finally arrived, a week later, it felt like a tiny victory. The slightly lopsided font and the intentionally imperfect line art of a squashed vehicle brought a smile to my face. Weirdly, wearing it sometimes makes me feel oddly confident. Like, if I survived a fender bender, I can probably handle a lot more life throws at me. It’s a small reminder that even the messy parts of life can be… well, almost okay.

It still sits folded in my closet, a tangible reminder of that ordinary Tuesday. It’s not a prized possession, far from it, really. But it’s a tiny reminder that even when things go slightly sideways, even when you feel like you’ve completely messed up, there’s always a way to find some sort of humor and even a little bit of resilience. It’s just a shirt, but it carries the story of a minor moment and the weirdest way of dealing with it.

Shirt is from the Dominican Republic. Words are printed on heavy cotton which is thick and not something I would wear in warm weather. Words or colour did not come off after one wash in the machine together with other clothes.
