Helen Mirren’s Oscar Night Instagram Diary Made Us Wish We Were Her Plus One
She wasn’t nominated for an award this year, but Helen Mirren did manage to win Instagram by documenting her Oscar night exploits in joyous fashion.
The 73-year-old industry veteran, who presented the trophy for Best Documentary Feature at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday night, kept her followers updated every step of the way – starting with a “very before” shot in the hair and make-up chair and culminating in an end-of-the-night selfie that showed off the “gob-smacking gorgeousness” of her Harry Winston bling.
After posing with her glam squad to show off her look – a frothy tulle Schiaparelli gown in the shade of the night, hot pink – Mirren posted a snap of anti-Trump protest signs from her car window as she was whisked to the ceremony.
Next up was advice on how to tackle the red carpet like a Dame. The 2009 Best Actress Oscar winner posted a picture of the waiting photographers moments before she faced the flashbulbs. Mirren’s tip? “Breath [sic] in head up hoike spanks and off we go… smile!”
This was followed by a moment of swooning over her co-presenter, 6ft3in action hero Jason Momoa, who she cuddled up to for some selfie action backstage (caption: “Oh Lord lucky me”) before they handed the Best Documentary Oscar to the team behind Free Solo.
With her presenting duties done, Mirren moved onto some mingling, posing for a photo with the “coolest Brit” Gary Oldman and sharing a snap of Serena Williams watching Bette Midler’s performance (while simultaneously FaceTiming her daughter, it seemed) with the caption “two enormous legends in one shot”.
One of her final – and perhaps our favourite – Instagram posts shows her twinning with Bird Box star Sarah Paulson, who wore a Brandon Maxwell dress in the same fuchsia pink as Mirren’s own princess gown. “Sarah and I rock pink,” she wrote. Didn’t she just.
